God's way is always best 661 01VIII2008

God's word commands us to rejoice and give thanks for all things.
God uses painful experiences to draw us away from trusting our feelings or ourselves. He patiently teaches us to rely upon Him and His word. We will begin to learn to be thankful for those hard places, and His peace replaced my fears.

God's word urges us to maintain a strong prayer life. We also know that He expects us to pray without ceasing. Jesus did. He is our example. To be honest, some days it is easier to pray with a thankful heart. At other times, it is just plain hard work. And yet, He commands us to pray. This takes faith.

Ephesians 5:15-20
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Right-of-way 660 31VII2008

What is the right way to live?

When it comes to our walk with the Lord, we do not have to have all these "rights-of-way". The only right way is to seek God through Christ.

Sin is sometimes hidden deep within us. It needs to be sought out and dealt with before it causes trouble. It can destroy us from within. Sin can tear us apart, if we let it. Taking it to the Lord through the blood of Christ is the only way -- the right way -- for us to live.

Hebrews 4:13
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

In a slump 659 30VII2008

Is your spiritual life in a slump ?

A slump is not the easiest thing to get out of. The difficult thing is that when one is in a slump it is not generally because one has intentionally changed anything in his style. One is still doing the same things and for the most part doing them the same way, but with different or failing results.

We allow ourselves to get too comfortable in what we are doing and before we know it, we are in a slump and our focus is gone. We lose sight of the joy that we had when we first came into God's family. We continue to "do the right things" but we forget why it is we are doing them. That is when we must remember the words of David in Psalm 51. He asks God to restore unto him the joy of his salvation, to bring his focus back to where it should be.

God's true desire for us is not one of deeds and actions, but rather the proper attitude and desire behind our deeds and actions. He desires for our spirits and hearts to be broken in such a way that our greatest longing and desire is to serve and praise Him. This may require us to step beyond our comfort zone, and God may then call us to areas we have never been to before. But only then will we come out of our slump and be restored to the joy that God would have for us.

Psalm 51:12,15-17
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Do not let the spirit vanish 658 29VI2008

We Christians have Jesus' Spirit living in us. Just as Jesus' followers were all filled with the Spirit on the day of Pentecost, we, too, can be filled with the Spirit. The Holy Spirit opens our eyes and enables us to understand God's word and accept the good news of the gospel. When the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives we are able to change. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. By the power of the Holy Spirit we can be joyful in all circumstances.

John 14:26
But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you.

Luke 11:13
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!

Looking back 657 28VII2008

Within our limited earthly view, we often struggle to understand or "see into" our earthly experiences, only to be disappointed with our scant understanding.

If you are in such a scenario, then you must especially walk by faith.

Life is not always clear or fair. But God is always faithful. He will see us through every moments of our lives!

1 Corinthians 13:12
We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!

Galatians 6:9
So let's not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don't give up, or quit.

Philippians 4:12-13
Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.

God is in control 656 27VII2008

God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. He created every star in every galaxy and calls them all by name. God created us and knows all of us by name. He knows us better than we know ourselves -- even our very thoughts! God loves us. He loved us so much that He sent His only Son Jesus to die on the cross for us -- for you, for me. What amazing love!

Do we trust the God who created us and who loves us with such an amazing love, to be in control of our lives?

Let us ask God to help us to control our lives, to help us to trust Him more and more

Psalm 47:8
God reigns over the nations.

Our friendly ghost 655 26VII2008

Where and who is the Holy Spirit ?

The Holy Spirit exists here in the world. He is all around us and in us. He is the comforter, the supporter, the one who enables, the one who empowers us.

Luke 11:13
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?

Faith like that of a child 654 25VII2008

Have you watched how fathers teach their young children to swim.
Remember how the father with his arms outstretched, call the little one to jump into the water. The kid was not prepared to jump in because of fear, but the father was there to catch him and be there for him. The kid trusted his father and hit the water. The child soon overcame his fear and did learn how to swim.
The only reason the kid jumped into the water was that he had faith in his father. It was an issue of trust.
What is faith ? Is it true that if one does not know the Bible they cannot have faith, or if one does not know doctrines and theology one cannot have faith. We must remember that it is faith like a child that allows people to approach God. We just need to trust and believe in what God has said. We need to take the plunge because we know that God will be there for us.
Matthew 19:14
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

Never take for granted 653 24VII2008

Our belief in Christ encompasses living our lives through His word as he has left it for us to hear and share. However, it is not enough for one to sit back and simply say one believes. Continuing to keep our faith can take hard work. We face challenges, temptations, and sorrows. We experience let-downs, put-downs and self-doubt. Yet through all of these, we are given the choice to see love, beauty, friendships, kindnesses, joys and self-worth. We must look after all that we are given, "and never take home for granted."

We must take the challenges we are given as ways to strengthen our faith that will lead us to look at life with loving kindness and understanding.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life

Psalm 71:17
O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.

Out with the old self 652 23VII2008

As a Christian, there should be a change in one's life. We must rid ourselves of immorality so that we can put on the new self. So it is out with the old, and in with the new. If the old does not get put out, there can be no room for the new to come in. If my faith is in Jesus, then my conduct should reflect that faith. I do not continue to live a life of immorality and still claim to be a Christian. It cannot be, because the old self should be taken off and the new put on.

Colossians 3:8-10
But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Because HE lives we can face tomorrow 651 22VII2008

There are times in our lives when we need a piece of scripture to lift us up. In such times very often we can't find the particular piece of scripture that we think meets our personal needs.

There are times when our heart cries out to the Lord and we feel that everything and everyone is against us. Depression seems to come out of nowhere. One day we feel so good, then something like a huge veil seems to cover us and there is no way out.

Very often the time we feel so cast down is the time that the Lord is pressing down so that He can get a firmer grip with which to lift us up. It is in God's timing, not ours, that He will lift us up. God is in control. We are His flock and the sheep of His pasture.

1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Dirty coffee cup 650 21VII2008

Those who drink coffee would know how nasty a white coffee cup would be like after some time with the coffee stains on it. To overcome this, some may use a black coffee cup. With this cup, it is very difficult to see the coffee stains in it, so it does not look so nasty. But the truth is that it is still just as stained as any white coffee cups. The only difference is that the stains have been hidden.

Can this also happen in our Christian walk?
We have sinned. Do you think you can hide your sins ?
As we have matured in faith, there is no hiding one's sin when one is walking in the light. So just as the white coffee cup cannot hide the stains, if we walk in the light our sins are not hidden.

1 John 1:6-7
If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Spiritual wisdom 649 20VII2008

It is important to study God's word diligently. As we take time to daily study His word, God equips us with life-changing truths and wisdom. His word washes and purifies us as we grow in the knowledge of Him.

Neglecting to study God's word would eventually affect our spiritual and physical life. God is always reminding us of His presence in our hearts and bringing us back to a closer relationship with Him.

Psalm 32:8
I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Ephesians 5:25-26
Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her; that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word.

Be careful of pedestals 648 19VII2008

We are often tempted to place our treasured belonging up high, lest they be touched by little hands and be broken. Many times the reason behind placing things higher is for greater viewing, or display. There is a certain adoration or elevation of worthiness which accompanies such things.

People are often put on pedestals. They are elevated to that position because someone or many people think their actions make them worthy of being placed there. The only problem is that, if the person on the pedestal elevates self to that position and loses humility, that person's security begins to loosen and, without external interferences or disturbance, such a person is more likely to fall.

Luke 18:9,13,14
And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased: and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Way out 647 18VII2008

God's word instructs us to endure trials and temptations. This is not popular when we have to go through headaches, hard work, difficulties, grief and depression. The truth is that going through temptations is the way out. We must recognize that to walking with Jesus through life’s difficulties.

1 Corinthians 10:13
Every test that you have experienced is the kind that normally comes to people. But God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.

Good housekeeping 646 17VII2008

As we do our periodic spring cleaning or housekeeping, we always wonder why we kept these things in the first place. They had been locked in a room for a year or months and we did not miss them or need them. Like many people, we kept the simple things that have a great meaning to us, such as pictures. We have so much stuff we do not really need. We have not missed any of it since getting rid of it. Yet at the time, it seemed so valuable to us.

In today's verses, Jesus tells us not to store up treasures for ourselves on earth. Jesus tells us to store up treasures for ourselves in heaven. By doing this, you could find your life so much more blessed and enriched. We can achieve this simply through acts of obedience to God. By doing God’s will instead of filling your life with material things, you will be much happier and your life will be more complete.

Matthew 6:19-21
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Communicating with HIM 645 16VII2008

As I watch the world becomes more and more complex, it is a comfort to know the Lord does not have any system requirements. All I need is an open heart and a quiet place: He is there, ready to listen and help me link to the kingdom. It is great to know that communicating with God will never be interrupted by any hardware failure, system breakdowns or any other technical failures.

We must ask God to bless with patience to deal with this complex world that we have made ourselves. We must ask God to guide our words and deeds to seek first His kingdom

Romans 5:1-2
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.

Peter's betrayal 644 15VII2008

Peter wept bitterly when he realized that he had let Jesus down. He was also crying because he had a good close look at himself. Just like Peter, we must face ourselves in order to comprehend our desperate need of God's help. When we are prepared to take this step in faith, we will begin to realize the depth of God's love for us. He sent His son Jesus to die for us while we were sinners.

Let us ask God to help us to see ourselves as we really are, so that we can discover more fully the depth of His unending love for us.

Psalm 139:1
Lord, you have examined me and you know me.

Romans 5:8
But God has shown us how much he loves us -- it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us!

Confess 643 14VII2008

The sin we have in our lives all started so innocently. We thought we could hide them, when they were so small, and they would not be noticed. If we allowed temptation to take root in our heart, the sins will be seen by all. Let us not allow sin to grow in our heart. Let's confess it and ask God for His forgiveness. We should never attempt to hide anything from God. He knows our hearts.

Luke 8:17
For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.

Putting up wallpaper 642 13VII2008

Those who had tried replacing wallpaper know exactly what has to be done.
First you have to tear down the old wallpaper. If there is another layer of old wallpaper beneath it, you too have to strip it down to the bare wall. Some may take the shorter route by pasting the new wallpaper over the old wallpaper. By stripping down to the bare wall, you will definitely need more time to prepare the wall and then taking it off.

In our lives we can either wallpaper over the old, doing half a job in a hurry and thinking it looks good, but with results which will not stand up to the test of time; or we can take the time and effort to do the wallpapering correctly, with results which bring lasting satisfaction.

In today's scripture, we are told that small is the gate and narrow the road which leads to life, while broad is the road that leads to destruction. Here the small gate and narrow road lead through Christ, while the broad road is human self-justification. Thinking that I am saved and that God loves me just because I am a good person in my own eyes is not the way. This is like putting on a new layer of wallpaper without tearing down the old. One must die to self, and start out as a new creation in Christ. It is only through faith in Jesus that one can find salvation. Sometimes this faith in Jesus calls us to make an effort in our life

Matthew 7:13-14
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Draw that power 641 12VII2008

The power of the Holy Spirit is a force to be reckoned with. Prayer is the plug into that power.

That power is given for a purpose -- not for personal enhancement. The power of the Spirit was given so that the story about the love of Jesus for us would be told.

Wherever we are, whatever is going on, whether we're being harassed or not, Jesus said to tell about the good things God has done in our lives. We are to tell it out to anyone who will listen, and tell the people, God loves them.

Acts 1:8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Luke 24:49
I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.

The tale of two gardens 640 11VII2008

One was filled with beauty and the other filled with hope.

The garden of Eden, where everything was perfect. God chose man to look after it. He gave only one command and that was not to eat of the tree of knowledge, for if he did he would know good and evil. In no time, man was led by Satan to evil and plucked the fruit that gained him his own downfall. He continued in his evil ways, until God destroyed almost all He had made by a flood. Afterwards, God promised never to repeat the destruction of man in this way again.

The garden of Gethsemane, where God's own son Jesus suffered the anguish of taking the bitter cup for our salvation and from there He proceeded to the cross, to suffer and die for us.

Let us think of how God, over the centuries, has tended to us and our needs. We should have been plucked out and thrown away forever. Instead, He gave us the warmth of His love and the light of His world; He made a home for us in His eternal garden, set aside for those who have blossomed out and grown in the light of His word. This garden prepared for us is eternal and everlasting.

Genesis 2:8-9
Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground -- trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Stop and listen 639 10VII2008

We desire and we crave. Sometime we suffer an unbearable yearning for something that seems unattainable. We experience feelings of sadness, inadequacy, despair, and discouragement, in connection with our inability to satisfy our longings, or to understand the mystery of why we are unable to have our heart's desire.

Sometimes, despite our trust in God, we ache. We weep. We rage. We call out to a God who doesn't seem to hear us.

Or maybe we don't hear Him. We think God doesn't hear us? When do we listen to Him?

Psalm 46 tells us of a noisy, crashing, busy story of nations in uproar, kingdoms toppling, mountains falling into the heart of the sea, waters roaring and foaming, and mountains quaking with their surging. There is destruction and desolation, fire that burns, weapons that are shattered.

And yet -- yet, we are not to fear because in verse 10, the Psalmist writes, "Be still, and know that I am God."

Sometimes, in our desperate grasping for something, we lose our ability to listen to messages of comfort and joy that abound even in our anguish. We should leave it to God: He has a reason for everything and if I don't understand it, that doesn't mean it's not right.

Psalm 46 : 1 – 3, 6, 10
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

Do you worry about tomorrow 638 09VII2008

It just seems so natural to start thinking about tomorrow long before it even arrives. While planning for tomorrow is a good idea, worrying about tomorrow never seems to provide any rewards. When we start to worry or concern ourselves with the problems of the days ahead, we lose the ability to overcome the problems we are facing right at the moment. It causes us to put our focus on the wrong things. The key is to focus on the right things, to focus on the here-and-now.

"Each day has enough trouble of its own." - focusing on today without worrying about what lies ahead of us is not easy to do. If we try to seek God and his kingdom first, Matthew tells us that the rest will take care of itself. In the preceding verses, Jesus mentions the things that people were concerned about: clothing, food and drink. These are the "things that will be added unto you." If you keep your focus on things eternal, and on God, he will provide all of your needs. Knowing that your needs are going to be provided makes it a little easier not to worry so much about tomorrow or what tomorrow may bring.

Matthew 6:33-34
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given unto you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Signal to respond 637 08VII2008

# 637

When we have a toothache we cannot simply ignore it. We must take action to correct the problem. So when the pain speaks to us we must respond to it.

In the same way, when God speaks to us, we must respond to him. We can listen to God and be obedient, or we can ignore him and be disobedient. If we are disobedient to God then we are separating ourselves from him. There may be times of pain and hardship but we endure these things because of the love God has shown us. So while pain is a motivation for going to see a dentist, love is the motivation for doing God's will.

John 14:23
Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him."

Relying on others 636 07VII2008

In our journey through life, many of us try to go through it by ourselves. We try relying on our own self-determination and strength. This may work at first but sometimes things get really tough. In order to keep going, reliance on God and on our fellow Christians becomes very important. The encouragement we give and receive helps us all one day get to the finish. That's why the Church is such an important gift from God to us.

Sometimes life gets difficult but we need to realize we are not alone. There are people around us who can offer us the help we need to get through the difficult situations in life. We must ask God to give us the strength to continue, to look for and accept the help that is offered to us. We also pray that if we see someone who is in need, that we will be given the wisdom to be able to help them, so that we can all finish the journey of life together.

James 1:12
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

What made you do it ? 635 06VII2008

What trial are you going through right now? Has it moved you to draw closer to the Lord, or caused you to wander off the path a bit? Has it caused you to dive into the Word, or have you tucked your Bible up on the shelf? Have you reached out to others who have gone, or are going through what you're experiencing, or have you tossed up those walls we're so great at putting up when we get hurt?

Sometimes the lesson may be hard to deal with. It may cause you to feel humiliated, ashamed, embarrassed, and you could also have wandered off the path a bit. You may also have put up walls and isolated yourself, all the while yearning for somebody to share your pain with. You could have been bitter and angry, and projected it all in the wrong places. The easiest thing for you to do would have been to cling to the Lord, yet all the same it was the easiest thing for you not to do.

The circumstances we deal with can bring us up or tear us down in our walks with Christ. It is in our ability to make them or break them. God has His perfect will, and it's not for us to wander away from Him. Paul wrote in the New Testament that God allows us to experience these trials in order that we will be able to minister to others. In the end, it works together for good, because ultimately we learn more about ourselves and more about God. And we will be able to sit next to that quiet, hurting person who became angry and bitter, who tucked their Bible on the shelf, who put up the walls, who wandered away. We'll be able to tell them it truly will be okay, because we've been through it.

Romans 8 : 28
All things work together for good to those who love the Lord, and are called according to His purpose.

Falling down 634 05VII2008

For our faith to grow, it must be tested. We may not always pass the test that God puts before us, but if we learn nothing from these failures, there is no growth in our Christian lives. If we let an obstacle keep us down and block our way, we can never go forward. If we rise up and overcome the obstacle, we may continue to go forward. We must learn that failure provides chances for us to grow.

Proverbs 24 : 16
For a just man falleth seven times and riseth up again.

Learning how to lean 633 04VII2008

Do you know that a gardener tie a stake to a climbing plant to sustain it under the weight it carries. The strength of the stake is transferred to the plant and thus bears it up.

Like wise, we should also carry each other’s burdens. We are to “stake ourselves to one another. We are to come alongside a brother or sister who is "weighed down" and say, "you're not going to fall and be broken or destroyed because I'm staking myself to you. My strength is now yours. Go ahead, lean on me. As long as I can stand, you will."

Galatians 6 : 2
Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Our journey through life 632 03VII2008

As we all know that salmon struggled, propelled by the mystery of nature which calls them home in an uphill battle to lay new life before losing their own. Some of these salmon were in pretty good shape. Others were bruised and battered; fins bent and broken; some, almost unrecognizable, seemed to have already been "scaled"; and there were those who were worn, weary and spent. Yet they continued, sure and steadfast. Some of us may find it hard to watch the beautiful and natural event of salmon going home to "leave life" before "leaving life".

We too have our routes predetermined. Some of us journey through life relatively unscathed. Others are bruised and battered emotionally, physically, spiritually. Many are bent and broken, unrecognizable from sickness, addictions, loneliness. Some seem to live in a constant uphill battle, worn, weary and spent.

While the salmon are pulled by a force of nature, we are pulled by the spirit, our hope and surety of salvation. When accompanied by Christ, no matter the obstacles through which we pass, strengthened by faith, our journey home is steadfast and sure; our cares comforted; our fears conquered.

Hebrews 6 : 18
Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.

At face value 631 02VII2008

Have you been in such situations when you had taken everything you had been told "at face value". You took everyone you had listened to "at face value", accepting everything being said as true. Upon looking at it from another side, you realized you were "short-changing" the situation. The whole truth was not being told because what you had accepted at "face value" was only several people's truth, but not everyone's.

Take this example. A US$1.00 is good at face value in the United States. It can buy you any thing in the store that is marked as $1.00. However, bring the US$1.00 to China, with a different monetary system, the face value changes. Likewise, bring the US$1 to Canada, again you have a different face value.

Now you know that there are always at least two sides to every story. But you must know that there is something we can take at "face value". God's love and understanding. His forgiveness and faithfulness. Always and forever.

2 Peter 3 : 17,18
Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware, lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.
