With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.
It is easy to squeeze the toothpaste out but impossible to get it back in. Well, that is exactly how it is with our words. It is easy for us to say things but once the words have tumbled out of our mouths, it is impossible to take them back.
In his letter, James reminds us that we can praise or curse with our tongue. It is the choice we have. We have seen a lot of people hurt by words but we have also seen the positive result of what happens when words are used to praise.
James 3 : 3 – 5 ; 9 - 10
Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
